A lo largo de los siglos, ha servido como palacio, fortaleza militar y residencia real. Durante la Guerra Civil qued\u00f3 gravemente da\u00f1ado en el asedio del 21 de julio al 27 de septiembre de 1936 y fue reconstruido entre 1939 y 1957 siguiendo el dise\u00f1o renacentista del siglo XVI. En la actualidad alberga el Museo del Ej\u00e9rcito y la Biblioteca de Castilla\u2011La Mancha.
