🇫🇷 1. STRASBOURG: THE CAPITAL OF CHRISTMAS

Strasbourg has been hosting its Christmas market since 1570. Every winter, its historic centre transforms into a festive wonderland filled with wooden stalls, beautiful decorations and twinkling lights.

📍 MUST-SEE SPOTS

  • Place Broglie: Home to the historic Christkindelsmärik Christmas market.
  • Place Kléber: Where you’ll find the city’s enormous Christmas tree.
  • Petite France: Strasbourg’s most photogenic neighbourhood, with traditional half-timbered houses and picturesque canals.

💰 PRICES

  • Entry: Free.
  • Mulled wine: Around €4–6.
  • Traditional sweet treats: Around €3–6.
  • Recommended stay: 1–2 days.

💡 A LITTLE-KNOWN FACT

At Place Grimmeissen, you’ll find Marché OFF, an alternative Christmas market featuring second-hand goods, local initiatives and unique gifts.

GuruWalk tip: Explore the stalls in the morning, then head back to the city centre after dark to see the Christmas lights at their best.

🇦🇹 2. VIENNA: CHRISTMAS AMONG PALACES

Vienna has several Christmas markets scattered across the city, but the most famous is held in Rathausplatz, right in front of City Hall.

📍 MUST-SEE SPOTS

  • Rathausplatz: Vienna’s most famous Christmas market.
  • Schönbrunn Palace: Experience Christmas in front of a former imperial residence.
  • Karlsplatz: A great spot for handmade crafts and unique gifts.

💰 PRICES

  • Entry: Free.
  • Mulled wine: Around €5–7.
  • Traditional food: Around €6–12.
  • Recommended stay: 2 days.

💡 A LITTLE-KNOWN FACT

At many Austrian Christmas markets, you’ll pay a deposit for your mulled wine mug.

You can either return it and get your money back or keep it as a souvenir. Not a bad way to remember your trip!

GuruWalk tip: The Rathausplatz market closes on 26 December, but the Schönbrunn Palace market stays open until 6 January 2027.

🇩🇪 3. NUREMBERG: GERMANY’S MOST TRADITIONAL CHRISTMAS EXPERIENCE

Nuremberg’s Christkindlesmarkt is one of Germany’s most famous Christmas markets, featuring around 180 stalls with their iconic red-and-white striped roofs.

📍 MUST-SEE SPOTS

  • Hauptmarkt: The main square where the Christmas market takes place.
  • Frauenkirche: The church where the market’s official opening ceremony is held.
  • Sister Cities Market: A collection of stalls selling products from around the world.

💰 PRICES

  • Entry: Free.
  • Traditional sausages: Around €5–8.
  • Lebkuchen (traditional spiced gingerbread): Around €3–7.
  • Recommended stay: 1–2 days.

💡 A LITTLE-KNOWN FACT

Every two years, Nuremberg selects a young woman to represent the Christkind, the traditional Christmas figure who officially opens the market from the balcony of the Frauenkirche.

Among the traditional requirements? She must be at least 1.60 metres tall and not afraid of heights.

GuruWalk tip: Don’t leave without trying Nürnberger Rostbratwürste, small grilled sausages traditionally served three at a time in a bread roll.

🇨🇿 4. PRAGUE: CHRISTMAS MAGIC UNTIL JANUARY

Prague is one of the best European destinations for a festive getaway after 25 December, as its main Christmas markets remain open until 6 January.

📍 MUST-SEE SPOTS

  • Old Town Square: Prague’s most famous Christmas market.
  • Wenceslas Square: Another of the city’s major festive markets.
  • Náměstí Míru: A more local alternative, away from the busiest tourist areas.

💰 PRICES

  • Entry: Free.
  • Trdelník (sweet chimney cake): Around €4–7.
  • Hot drinks: Around €3–6.
  • Recommended stay: 2 days.

💡 A LITTLE-KNOWN FACT

Although trdelník is often sold as a traditional Prague speciality, it isn’t unique to the city.

Similar pastries have been made in other parts of Central Europe for centuries.

GuruWalk tip: Food and drinks at the Old Town Square market tend to come with tourist prices. Compare a few stalls before buying.

🇭🇺 5. BUDAPEST: CHRISTMAS LIGHTS, AMAZING FOOD & THERMAL BATHS

Budapest combines magical Christmas markets with experiences you won’t find everywhere, like relaxing in its famous thermal baths.

Its Advent Bazilika market has been recognised several times as one of Europe’s best Christmas markets.

📍 MUST-SEE SPOTS

  • Advent Bazilika: Budapest’s most famous Christmas market.
  • St Stephen’s Basilica: The stunning backdrop for festive light projections.
  • Vörösmarty Square: Another of Budapest’s main Christmas markets.

💰 PRICES

  • Entry: Free.
  • Kürtőskalács (traditional chimney cake): Around €4–8.
  • Traditional food: Around €8–15.
  • Recommended stay: 2 days.

💡 A LITTLE-KNOWN FACT

Every evening, the façade of St Stephen’s Basilica transforms into a giant screen for spectacular Christmas light projections.

The show is completely free and starts from 5.30 pm.

GuruWalk tip: Combine your Christmas market visit with a trip to the Széchenyi Thermal Baths. There’s nothing quite like soaking in warm outdoor pools on a freezing winter’s day.

⚠️ 5 THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE BOOKING

  • Double-check the dates: Many Christmas markets close on 24 December, so don’t assume they’ll still be open when you arrive.
  • Travel during the week: Weekends in December can get incredibly busy. Visiting from Monday to Thursday usually means fewer crowds.
  • Bring some cash: While card payments are widely accepted, some smaller stalls may still be cash-only.
  • Don’t eat every meal at the markets: Local restaurants can sometimes be cheaper, especially away from the main tourist areas.
  • Book your accommodation early: December weekends are incredibly popular, and prices tend to rise as Christmas approaches.
