Things to do in Lima in one day

Morning
Start in Lima’s Historic Center, where the city’s colonial past is concentrated around Plaza Mayor. The Cathedral, Government Palace and ornate façades make this the natural starting point for a first visit.
Then head to Museo Larco. Its pre-Columbian collection is displayed in an 18th-century mansion surrounded by gardens, and it gives useful context for the archaeological sites you will see elsewhere in Peru.
Finish the morning in Miraflores. A walk along the Miraflores boardwalk opens onto the Pacific, with green parks above the cliffs and, when conditions allow, surfers below and paragliders overhead.
Afternoon and evening
Spend the afternoon in Barranco, Lima’s artsy, bohemian district. Street art, early-20th-century houses and the wooden Bridge of Sighs make it a good neighborhood to explore without a rigid route.
Next, visit Huaca Pucllana, an adobe ceremonial complex built by the Lima culture long before the Spanish arrived. It is a striking reminder that the modern city grew around a much older one.
For the evening, return to Miraflores and stop at Kennedy Park. Cafés, restaurants, street performers and the park’s well-known cats make the surrounding area lively after dark.
Plaza Mayor

Plaza Mayor, also known as Plaza de Armas, is the historic heart of Lima. The Government Palace, Lima Cathedral, Archbishop’s Palace and Municipal Palace frame the square, making it one of the best places to read the city’s colonial history in its architecture.
The ceremonial Changing of the Guard is another draw. It is generally held around midday, but the time, participating unit and public access can change or be suspended for official events, so confirm the current schedule before planning your visit around it.
Historic Center
Discover Lima’s historic centre with a guide

Lima’s Historic Center preserves an exceptional group of colonial and republican buildings. The UNESCO World Heritage property was inscribed in 1988 and extended in 1991.
Plaza Mayor anchors the district, but leave time for the surrounding streets, balconies, churches and cultural spaces. The area is busy and distances can be deceptive, so a focused walking route works better than trying to cover every landmark in a single morning.
Tips for visiting Lima’s Historic Center
- 🕰️ When to go: late morning usually gives you good daylight for the façades, though official events can affect access around Plaza Mayor.
- 🖼️ Look beyond the monuments:
- Notice the street art and balconies as you move between the main squares.
- A local walking tour can connect the architecture with the social history behind it.
- 📚 Smaller cultural stops:
- The House of Peruvian Literature, in the former Desamparados railway station, has free admission and currently opens Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
- The Central Reserve Bank’s Museo Central (MUCEN) also has free admission and currently opens Tuesday to Sunday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
- 🍵 Local flavors:
- Try turrón de Doña Pepa, a traditional layered sweet covered in syrup and sprinkles.
- Browse Lima’s Central Market for produce and everyday local food, while keeping an eye on your belongings in the crowded streets around it.
Museo Larco

Museo Larco stands in Pueblo Libre at Avenida Simón Bolívar 1515, with the entrance on Navarra 169. Founded in 1926 by archaeologist Rafael Larco Hoyle, the museum occupies an 18th-century mansion built over a pre-Hispanic pyramid.
Its approximately 45,000 archaeological objects include ceramics, textiles and metalwork, as well as the well-known erotic pottery gallery and visible storage rooms. As of August 2026, it opens daily from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.; general admission is S/50 at the ticket office or S/45 online. Holiday hours and promotional rates vary, so check the museum before visiting.
Barranco
Explore Miraflores and Barranco by bike

Barranco is Lima’s best-known bohemian district. Its colorful houses, galleries, cafés and street art give it a more intimate feel than the broad avenues of neighboring Miraflores.
The Bridge of Sighs is its emblematic landmark. Local legend says that a wish made while crossing the wooden bridge in one breath will come true. Whether or not you try it, the bridge and the nearby Bajada de Baños form an easy route toward the coast.
Miraflores

Miraflores combines clifftop parks and Pacific views with restaurants, shops and a busy evening scene. It is a practical base for first-time visitors and a useful counterpoint to the Historic Center.
The Miraflores boardwalk links several parks above the cliffs. Walking, cycling and paragliding are popular here, although weather and safety conditions determine when aerial activities operate.
Kennedy Park

Kennedy Park sits at the center of Miraflores and is known for its resident cats, shaded paths and lively public spaces. Artists and small vendors often gather around the park, particularly later in the day.
Restaurants, cafés and shops fill the surrounding streets, so the park is an easy meeting point before dinner or an evening walk. The atmosphere can be busy rather than peaceful at peak times.
Huaca Pucllana

In the middle of modern Miraflores, Huaca Pucllana preserves an adobe ceremonial center associated with the Lima culture, which flourished roughly between AD 200 and 700. Its vertically stacked adobe bricks are one of the site’s most distinctive features.
Excavations have uncovered ceramics, tools and burials that help explain how the complex changed over time. A guided circuit takes visitors through the site museum, reconstructed activity areas and parts of the pyramid.
Planning note: as of August 2026, daytime visits run from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with Tuesday closed, and general admission is S/15. Night visits run Wednesday to Sunday by reservation and cost S/17, but the official museum and Ministry of Culture pages show slightly different evening times. Confirm your booked time directly before going.
Miraflores boardwalk

The Miraflores boardwalk, or malecón, follows the clifftop above the Pacific. Its parks, pedestrian paths and cycle lanes make it one of the easiest places in Lima to spend time outdoors.
Along the way you will find gardens, contemporary sculptures and lookout points. The route is long, so choose a section or use a bike if you do not want to turn the walk into a half-day plan.
Love Park is the best-known stop, with colorful mosaics and Víctor Delfín’s sculpture El Beso (1993). It is especially popular around sunset.
Seasonal note: Lima’s summer runs roughly from December to March. Winter often brings low cloud and coastal mist known as garúa, so ocean views are not guaranteed.
Magic Water Circuit
See Lima after dark

The Magic Water Circuit in Parque de la Reserva combines fountains, lights, music and projections. Opened in 2007, it has 13 cybernetic fountains, including the Fuente de la Fantasía and Fuente Mágica.
The park works best as an evening stop, when the multimedia shows are running. Arrive with enough time to walk between the fountains rather than planning only around one show.
As of August 2026: open daily from 3:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.; multimedia shows at 7:15 p.m., 8:15 p.m. and 9:10 p.m.; general admission S/7. Children under five enter free with physical ID. Hours, shows and prices can change.
How to get there
| Option | Details |
|---|---|
| Metropolitano | Use Estadio Nacional station, then walk to Parque de la Reserva. |
| Taxi or ride-hailing app | Use “Parque de la Reserva” as the destination and confirm the most convenient entrance with the driver. |
